Winter Melon (Ash Gourd) & Cucumber Cold Soup


Few years back I could have never imagined drinking or eating a raw ash gourd :) But I regret now that i missed all these years :) This is a perfect summer recipe and with combo of cucumber and buttermilk it is heavenly.

It it believed that the Winter melon (Ash gourd) helps to loss weight !!! I don't know probably should give it a try ;) It is recommended to consume in the empty stomach early in the morning.. If you are up to something like that you should give it a try, else also I recommend to try it.

Preparation time: 10 mins
Serves : 2 cups

Ingredients:
  • Ash gourd - 2 cups
  • Cucumber - 1 cup
  • Buttermilk - 1 cup (diluted)
  • salt - to taste
  • Roasted cumin powder, crushed pepper - to taste
Direction:

Basically add all ingredients together in blender and strain the chunks out and finally drizzle some cumin powder and pepper on top.

Adding spices is my preference you can leave it out if you don't want to. I like when the there is a tint of spice in the soup or Juice :) I hope it can be called juice too ;)

Some people like to add green chilli to it. But I dint want to add raw chilli to the cold drink. But as i said its totally upto you.

  1. I have never tried ash gourd before. Will have to ask my grocer, not even sure if they have. Do you think I could use a different gourd if I can't find?

  2. Hi annette, you can find Ash gourd in any Indian grocery store. It usually cut into large pieces and sold.

    To my knowledge you can try to use bottle gourd instead of ash gourd, but note it is much sweeter than ash gourd. Not sure if it will go well with this soup.

    If you don't like to substitute, you can exclude winter melon / ash gourd and go with just chilled cucumber and buttermilk soup.
